Breathing heavily, Kaye rested her hands on her thighs, the door to her home sliding closed behind her. Victoria leaned against the wall in the foyer, just as winded after their run from the train stop to Kaye’s house.

After a few moments, Kaye straightened, the one side of her mouth turned up in a half smile. “We made it.”

Victoria nodded slowly, trying to take in the home of the leabu and her two friends, but not seeing much past the walls around her.

Making her way into the first room of the house, Kaye motioned for her to follow. “C’mon in. Have a seat.”

Three chaise lounge chairs covered in what looked to be white leather surrounded a floating table. Nothing else filled the minimalist space. Not even a single picture hung on the wall. Victoria sat on the chair at the narrow end of the table, placing her hands in her lap. Away from the slight familiarity of Thanh, she had no idea how to act, how comfortable to get. Unlike when Kaye had stayed with her, she remained wide awake, with no hint of sleepiness.

“I’ll be right back.” Kaye moved to the doorway. “I just need to change and then I’ll grab us something to drink.”

Drink. Yes, she never did have a beverage at the club. And while the worry about an alien drugging her refreshment proved irrelevant, she needed something to quench her thirst after racing to Kaye’s place and to get rid of her dry mouth from lusting after her friend. Gods, how she yearned to simply ask Kaye how she felt, but she’d learned after Ellie to keep her mouth shut. Best to keep her attraction to herself and never know if it was reciprocated than to lose all the friends she’d worked so hard to get.

Kaye returned a few minutes later with frosted mugs filled with a pale purple liquid with smoke rising from the top. The beverage caught Victoria’s attention for only a second before she noticed the bare, pale skin of the leabu carrying them. Kaye had shed her exoskeleton and waltzed into the room in the buff.

Victoria turned her head away, her cheeks heating up like an ancient oven back on Earth. Did the leabu walk around nude on a regular basis or had she repeated her state of undress to tempt her?

After setting the drinks on the table, Kaye plopped onto the same chaise as her, the leabu’s right side brushing against Victoria’s left. No worry about invading personal space. Kaye reached into Victoria’s ear and pulled out her translator. “You won’t be needing this tonight.”

Victoria tilted her head, confused. “You speak English?”

“We call it Terran here, but yeah.”

“Why?” With the people of Earth so hated on this side of space, it made no sense to study any languages from the planet.

“I don’t know.” She shrugged as if everyone at Thanh spoke English. “I’ve always admired Earth, how far your planet advanced without any help from the alliance. That is, until the first of your kind arrived.
